Nolan Thomas, yo' Little Brother, spotify, youtube, spotifythrowbacks, classic music, classic pop

I think it’s pretty safe to say that my average visitors are not old enough to know half of what I post. But, let me tell you this was my jam growing up. I think Nolan Thomas was a “One Hit Wonder.” I don’t recall hearing any other hits after this one. The video is cute too. This tells the story of what music was like in the 80s. Probably my most favorite era, in terms of musical fun. Check it out!!

spotify, mary jane girls, spotifythrowbacks, throwbacks, classic music, rick james protege

After watching Rick James documentary a couple of days ago, I was inspired to share one of my favorite forgotten songs by one of Jame’s proteges; The Mary Jane Girls! Their song was called “In My House.” This song was the jam back in the day. A lot of people didn’t think they were gonna last. They were thought of as a novelty rather than a group with true latent. They can really sing! And if you don’t think so, check out another old song called “You’re My Heaven.”

The Partridge Family - Spotifythrowbacks.com

Song: I Think I Love You

Artist: David Cassidy & The Partridge Family

Album: The Definitive Collection (1974)

Genre: Young Pop

Wow, I guess I’ve been blogging and tweeting for so long, I can’t even remember if I’ve written about certain artists anymore ?. But, who cares? There will always be someone who didn’t see, and what you don’t see is still considered “new” in my opinion. I’m almost willing to bet that I can’t find at least 10 of my young readers who know about the legendary Partridge Family! Which is a shame, because although many young people today might not connect with classic music artists, kids in my era did watch a LOT of TV. You’d think that more young people would remember something of their parents playing or watching The Partridge Family.

You Should Remember The Partridge Family, We’ve Watched Too Much TV Not To!

David Cassidy - The Partridge Family - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

You know, growing up, I never really liked guys with very long hair. But, I discovered that some are the exception to the rule (I guess). Perhaps it’s that “swagger” that my elders used to speak of? Some guys are born with a particular kind of energy that can get away with doing things that others can’t. David Cassidy’s swagger added to his sex-appeal, which is why he had hoards of female fans. I mean, girls screamed for him in the same way they did for Elvis. In the 80s, girls were still drooling over him. Back then, guys like him were called “Heart Throbs.”

David Cassidy Was The Group’s Bread Winner!!

The Partridge Family - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

If I remember correctly, none of The Partridge Family were actual professional musicians with the exception of David. In fact, David was the only one who knew how to actually play an instrument. Even the scenes with the young Brian Foster or Suzanne Crough (I can’t remember which) that played the drums on the show, all of that was fake. They did it in such a way that it looked realistic. I’m not sure of their singing though, since David has always been lead singer since I can remember. Sometimes it’s hard to figure those things out. For all we know, the family’s faces could be on the album purely to associate it with the show.

Only David Was The Real Musician!

David Cassidy - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

As to whether these guys are legendary music artists is debatable. I guess depending on who you talk to, and which category you put them in, either actors or performers. Regardless, there’s no question that they’ve played a role in music history tho. Their biggest hit is a song called “I Think I Love You (1970).” I can’t find the billboard position for this song, but Spotify alone shows 15M streams just on this album. To my understanding, the song was so successful that almost immediately after, he started working on a solo albums. He did a cover of a song called “Cherish” which was originally recorded by a group called “The Associations.” It was very well done. It actually sounded a lot like the original. Another favorite of mine I think you should checkout, his song called “I Woke Up In Love This Morning.” I used to play this song all the time. Unfortunately, David died in 2017 of liver failure.

The System - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: You are In My System

Artist: The System

Album: Sweat (1983)

Genre: Synth-Pop

Ok guys… This is one of those situations where, I do not think this group is anywhere near extraordinarily talented. I’m not even sure if I think their music is average. Honestly, I think they’re the kind of group that you may hear cover for a sick performer, or perhaps open a show for someone more famous. Lead singer Mic Murphy & keyboardist David Frank, came together to form “The System.” They started their career in the early 80s. I believe the above was actually their first album I think.

They’ve Performed Off And On Throughout Their Career.

Although, I wasn’t particularly turned by their music,  they did produce two of what became my only favorites by them. The first is a song called “You Are In My System,” released in 1983. I remember hearing this music a lot, just before dance movies started becoming popular, like “Beat Street (1984).” The song only reached #64 on the Top 100 Chart, but reached #10 under R&B singles. If I’m not mistaken, Robert Palmer did a cover of this song too. Would you believe Robert’s version reached #4 on the dance category? That was interesting to me, since I don’t think he really changed the music arrangements much. I guess it really boiled down to performance.

The System - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

The second and last song they’ve mad that became my ultimate favorite, as a song called “Don’t Disturb This Groove.” It was released in 1987, and it was off of their tittle album “Don’t Disturb This Groove.” Now, oooooooo snaps!! This song was boss in my opinion! And I guess other people thought so too, because it shot up to #1 on the R&B category and #4 on the Top 100 Chart. Growing up I never had any of their albums, but I loved hearing it on the radio. You should check out the video too.

Nell Carter - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: Give Me A Break (Theme From Give Me A Break)

Artist: Nell Carter

Album: Not Found (On YouTube)

Genre: Pop Music

Again, this is one of those moments were it’s hard to believe a certain artist have become obscured. I really try to be mindful and not sound like a broken record. I just hope that at least some of my readers can understand, it’s not until you’re older that we really have a concept of just how fast time moves. Then, the next thing you know, you’re talking to a generation of people who don’t have a clue as to who you’re talking about. The late Nell Carter was a phenomenal actress and comedian, who also happened to be a phenomenal singer too!

Her Work Extended Beyond Her Hit TV Show!

Give Me A Break TV show - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

If you ask an 80s baby, most will probably tell you that they only remember Nell Carter (if any) for her popular hit 80s TV show “Give Me A Break (1981-1987).”  The theme song was so catchy, it was impossible to not at least be aware of Nell Carter, even if you never watched the show. Personally, I’ve watched quite a few episodes growing up, and I found it quite enjoyable too. Dealt with all kinds of subject matter, the kinds of subject matter that today’s writers would probably see as too politically incorrect or controversial for young children/family to watch. Nell really had a gift of acting. She knew how to deliver a joke right. But I really would have like to have seen her really expand her vocal career.

Ain't No Missbehavin' SpotifyThrowbacks.com

long before her hit show “Give Me A Break,” she was made famous for another hit. But, it wasn’t a TV show. It was actually a play. A musical play called “Ain’t No Misbehavin’.” I believe the play was first opened in 1978. She started as a featured actress, and the phenomenal performance she gave landed her a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award! Check out her live performance of a song called “If I Can’t Sell It (I’ll Keep Sittin’ On It),” from the play “Ain’t No Misbehavin’ (1999).” I also discovered that she was also in the Broadway play called “Annie,” around the very late 1990s close to 2000. Unfortunately, there are very, very few recordings of Nell singing. They’re almost non existent if you ask me. She had such a unique voice that was unmistakably hers.

She Appeared On Many Shows!

I didn’t realize just how many special TV appearances she’s made! That includes “227,” “Amen,” and “Ally McBeal.” She even had a small role on one of the day-time soap operas called “Ryan’s Hope” back in the day.  It’s so hard to believe that Nell started out singing in coffee shops, to then become a superstar! She was a great person, and humanitarian woman to my understanding. Such a shame that her name has drifted away from the lips of most American people. Nell Carter 1948-2003.

Mullally - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: She Don’t Know Me

Artist: Mullally

Album: She Don’t Know Me (2017) Single Release

Genre: Pop Music

Ok guys…. I know… I know… I’m probably came late to the party! But, I literally just found out about this song about 2 weeks ago. Now, I acknowledge that my more older readers probably may not connect with this song. However, to those of us who are a little more flexible with their music tastes, particularly the dance genre, I think it’s a great song to check out.

Doesn’t Appear His Music Reached The Billboards Yet

You know, I don’t know if my readers can agree with me or not, but I really think he’s the “new aged blue eyed soul,” for this generation! This young man has some real vocal skills in my opinion. He enunciate every word exactly to each fast paced beat. Not too many people who can do that. Despite this particular song hit almost 1.5 million plays, and being a certified hit, the song has not hit anywhere on the Billboard Chart. Having said that, I also discovered that he still isn’t signed to any label yet, which could explain why his music didn’t reach Billboard status.

Mullally - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

But that doesn’t mean that he’s not being talked about around the internet. Despite being around since 2016? Give or take? I can’t seem to find any full albums. But you know what also? In my research, I discovered something I never knew before. Did you know that there’s a such thing as “The Unsigned Awards?” Yes, in 2016 he won an Unsigned Award! That is so inspiring. How wonderful that an organization recognizes talent not in mainstream media. I haven’t found any awards ceremonies since 2018, I do hope they’re continuing with the project. Mullally doesn’t appear to have made any full albums. He has about 4 releases on Spotify.

Todd Rundgren - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: Hello, It’s Me

Artist: Todd Rundgren

Album: Something/Anything? (1972)

Genre: Pop

Do you remember this guy? Todd Rundgren’s music really isn’t obscure (I don’t think), but relative to today’s masses, he’s unheard of. Although he performed many different genres, so far the ones I found worth listening has been his pop songs. He started his career in the mid seventies, and has been known for his outrageous/unconventional wardrobe. Now, I don’t know, I always thought that his music required a certain taste. But, much to my surprise, it appears that a LOT of people love his music! For me, I only loved one song he has written. And that song was “Hello It’s Me,” from his 1972 album “Something/Anything?.” The song hit #5 on the Top 1000 Charts. I played this song so much back in the day, it wasn’t even funny. I was barely 5 years old when this song came out. What the hell was it about the song I loved so much? I thought perhaps it was the arrangements of the synthesizers; or perhaps his voice. Till this day, I still can’ figure out why only this song, and not none of his other works? I should have put him in the “one hit wonder” category, but this may or may not be exactly true. Check out this remix of “Hello, It’s Me,” I found by Philip Steir. Two years later, in 1974, the legendary Isley Brothers performed a cover of “Hello, It’s Me.” It’s a shame that the Isley’s cover didn’t appear anywhere on the Billboard’s 100/200 charts. I loved their version too.

Elliott Yamin - Spotifythrowbacks.com

Song: Movin’ On

Artist: Elliot Yamin

Album: Elliot Yamin (2007)

Genre: Pop Music

Wow, I haven’t listened to this dude in a really long time! Judging from his last name, I’m gonna make a safe assumption he is Jewish. When I tell you Elliot Yamin is talented, this man can sing his ass off! I totally love his work! His self titled album “Elliot Yamin,” was the first of his albums I listened to, and I fell in love with his music ever since. If you love popin’ pop music, please don’t judge Yamin by his album cover. He is seriously talented in my opinion. “Movin’ On,” I think is the perfect song for me to use to introduce my readers. The bulk of his music is primarily a mixture dance, pop, and hip hop.

Hip Hop, Pop, & Dance, All Rolled Up In To One

Unfortunately, Elliot has only produced about 3 albums, yet according to what I’ve been reading, he is still performing. Out of the three albums he has done, his first self titled album received the most success. But not nearly enough in my opinion; he was seriously underrated. Plus, I guess since music streaming has changed music forever, unless you were already a music legend before streaming took over, it’s bloody difficult.

Elliot Yamin - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

So, his song “Movin’ On,” charted #61 on the Top 100 Billboard Chart (which I think is bullsh** because the song is hot). The second song from this album, “Waiting For You,” ranked #13 on Top 100. But his entire album ranked #3! How confusing is that? Well, winning 3rd place on the 5th season of American Idol may have had a lot to do with it. I really would have liked to see more promotions by him. Check out “How Do I know,” and “Virginia.”

Janet Jackson - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: Alright

Artist: Janet Jackson

Album: Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989)

Genre: Pop

We all know that Janet comes from a family where talent is in their genes. I think it’s safe to say that, there’s no question, for most people, at least half of Janet’s music we love. She’s done house, pop, romance, you name it! Janet has done just about every kind of music except country (that I’m aware of LOL). I’m so glad I hadn’t heard any country songs from her; because back in the day, once a known pop artist come out with a country album, usually it’s a bad sign that your career is dying. Not sure if that’s still true today but… Just sayin’… Out of all my many favorites, “Alright” has been on the top of my list. It may also be because of her music video, the whole “film noir” setting. One thing I’ve always loved about both Janet and Micheal, they always pay tribute (in someway) to classic film. “Alright (1989)” hit #4 on the Hot 100 charts! The entire Rhythm Nation album in my opinion is number one. I think both her Control & Rhythm Nation is her best work. Unfortunately, this single remix album is out of print. However, you can find it on Discogs.

Debarge - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: You Wear It Well

Artist: DeBarge

Album: Rhythm Of The Night (1985)

Genre: Pop Music

I’m taking you back to 1985, with one of my favorite groups, DeBarge!! These guys were sooooo talented. I’m really saddened that their lives took such a negative turn. They were one of the few groups, where I always looked forward to hearing their next albums. As far as I can tell, only El is still performing (still sounds wonderful by the way), and Chico is still performing as well (has two great solo albums of his own). Bobby DeBarge is deceased.

There were to huge hits from this album. The first song everyone in my age group instantly remembers from the movie sound track “The Last Dragon (1985),” the song is called “Rhythm Of The Night (1985).” I loved this song. It was one of those happy songs that almost made you dance out in the streets. The second catchy tune from this album was called “You Wear It Well.” I will bet almost any amount of money that half (if not most) people forgot this song! This was a really cute song in my opinion. I just love that distinct 80s sound, it never gets old for me!

Gladys Knight & The Pips - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: Love Overboard

Artist: Gladys Knight & The Pips

Album: All Our Love (1987)

Genre: Pop Music

I think the last generation took for granted just how many hits Gladys Knight & The Pips actually had (beyond their “Imagination (1973)” album) back in the day. Fans immediately zero in on their iconic songs like “Midnight Train To Georgia,” and “If I Were Your Woman.” However, “Love Overboard” was the sh*t too back in the day. The song peaked at #13 on the Top 100 charts. This was the perfect dance love song. At the time, this song was huge, because it was their first top 40 hit in quite a few years.

Swing Out Sister

Song: Breakout

Artist: Swing Out Sister

Album: Swing Out Sister (1987)

Genre: Pop Music

Do you guys remember a really old eighties group called “Swing Out Sister?” The group consists of Andy Connell & Corinne Drewery. I have to be honest, I wasn’t really in to their music. I only loved one songs= from them, and that was “Breakout.” It’s a really fun song that kind of still reminds me of my party days. It’s not necessarily a “club song,” probably more like a song you’d play at a teenage barbecue. But, never the less, it’s very entertaining and danceable. The song hit #6 on the Top 100, and #1 in Adult Contemporary. This was a pretty huge hit around the world. They also did a cover of Barbara Acklin’s “Am I The Same Girl (1992).” The song hit #45 on the Top 100. This song has such a great melody that it seems you’re almost virtually guaranteed you’ll wind up somewhere on the charts. Breakout was their biggest hit of their career.

Color Me Bad - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Song: I Wanna Sex You Up!

Artist: Color Me Badd

Album: C.M.B. (1991)

Genre: Pop Music

Ok, how many of you “classic fan wanna be(s)” remember Color Me Badd? I bet a whole lot of people forgot about these guys, cause I don’t even hear any radio stations playin’ these guys anymore! C.M.B. where the kings of pop music in the 90s. But today, they are a hot f**king mess ?. What a darn shame. What made matters even worse for the fading group, was the recent assault perpetrated by Bryan Abrams on one of the group’s fellow members on stage. It’s been alleged that Bryan has huge issues with alcoholism and violence. Such a damn shame, a once lead singer of the hottest number one singing group of the 90s, to now becoming a hasbeen.

Song: Don’t You Want Me

Artist: The Human League

Album: Dare (1981)

Genre: Pop Music

I’m not sure if I can call this UK group obscure, but damn! Is this song old! ? This song not only hit #1, it stayed #1 for a total of three weeks before it slowly started to dropped. This song was my sh*t back in the day. It was a massively popular, fun and a danceable tune. They also had another #1 hit in 1986 called “Human.” I absolutely loved this song too. It was almost like a romantic pop song (if there is a such thing). These two songs were their only cemented international hits in history.

Rupert Holmes - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Another guy that didn’t fit the stereotype at first glance! Once again, we can’t judge a book by it’s cover. Even myself. As diverse as my taste in music is, even I have to be reminded sometimes. Then again, I grew at a time where there was no music streaming. You had to either buy a whole album, or hoped and prayed that a friend had the same album so you can listen to it. Or better yet, ask your friend to make a cassette tape for you! ?? But seriously though. He looked something like my 4th grade math teacher.

Rupert Holmes - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

No way did I perceive Rupert Holmes as a singer! Never in my wildest of dreams would I have thought that Rupert would produce one of the most popular pop songs to end the 70s with. In 1979, Rupert wrote and recorded a song called “Escape (The Pina Colada Song).” A song pretty much about a guy who’s bored with his girl, and decides to hook up with a stranger. This song not only shot up to #1 on the Top 100 Charts, it stayed #1 for 3 weeks! That was huge in the vinyl era. It almost seemed like he written this song while he was on a tropical vacation or something! He had another song called “Him” that peaked at #6. I wasn’t impressed, but people liked it. The only other song I liked from Rupert was “Get Outta Yourself.” Unfortunately, it appears that song did not register on the Billboard Charts. Shame.

SpotifyThrowbacks.com - Culture Club

Does anybody remember this oldies album from the legendary Culture Club? Unfortunately, this was not one of their most successful albums as a whole. I’m wondering if this is why the licenses for almost every song on this album have been nuked. However, they did have two hits from this album that had done fairly well on the charts (I think).

SpotifyThrowbacks.com
UNITED STATES – JUNE 30: Photo of CULTURE CLUB and Mikey CRAIG and Jon MOSS and BOY GEORGE and Roy HAY; Posed group portrait L-R Mikey Craig, Jon Moss, Boy George and Roy Hay (Photo by Ebet Roberts/Redferns)

My favorite out of the two is their song called “Move Away (1986).” Now, I know it may sound like I’m contradicting myself, but although I liked this song, I also think I liked it because the song just happens to be a catchy tune. Almost like a jingle or a catch phrase (kind of). The other song is called “God Thank You Woman (1986).” This is another catchy tune. The tune is actually danceable. Unfortunately, only the 12 inch extended version is available on Spotify. I much prefer the original album version, or radio edit.

Absolutely No Doubt!! The group called “No Doubt” was one of my many classic bands! I’m not prepared to say they’re forgotten about; but we’re just not hearing their music on mainstream media. You know, I used to confuse them a lot with a Swedish group called “The Cardigans.” By the way, The Cardigans had only one hit I liked, and it was called “LoveFool (1996).” Their lead singer, Nina Perssons sounds EXACTLY like Gwen Stefani.

I Used To Confuse Them With The Cardigans!

No Doubt is an American group from California, and they got together around the mid 80s. They’re uniquely stylish and eccentric in many ways. I think it’s safe to say that Gwen is one of the many female performers, who have decided to channel that Marilyn Monroe persona, which eventually became part of her trademark for awhile.

Rock band called No Doubt! SpotifyThrowbacks.com

I can’t believe it’s been about 25 years already. It seemed as tho it was only yesterday since I first fell in love with their music. One of the things I really like about this group back then, was you can immediately tell how comfortable they are with each other. In other words, despite the change in band members over the course of their careers, you can tell they have that magic that creates close friendships. Friends in a band makes great music! Well, most of the time ?

Band called No Doubt - SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Now, as I’ve said before, No Doubt is an eccentric band, and it took me awhile to warm up to their music. I’m sorry but, on their first couple of albums (no disrespect) Gwen sounded like she was having seizures or something. I didn’t start liking  their music until after about their third album I think called “Tragic Kingdom (1995).” On this album, they released an awesome song called “Don’t Speak,” which shot up to #1 on the Top 40 Charts! I was really diggin’ this song. Yeah, the lyrics are sad as hell, but it’s a great song that we can relate to, and we can listen to it without getting depressed ? Another great song from this same album is called “Just A Girl.”

Now, They Were Cookin’

From the album “Tragic Kingdom” on, they were cookin’. If I were forced to pick a favorite all-time No Doubt song, it would have to be “Underneath It All,” (clean version) featuring Lady Saw. I also think that “Hey Baby,” is a cute song too; it has a mixture of pop with dancehall beats. Today, No Doubt has got together with a group called AFI to form Dreamcar! But, I have to be honest, they’ve definitely lost that “No Doubt” sound. Now, the band’s music sounds like an upgrade to a dated 80s rock sound. Clearly you can hear they’re trying to rekindle the old parts of the band, and it’s not working for me. However, maybe you guys like it! Check out the new group Dreamcar on Spotify.

Casanova by Levert! SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Wow! Even as a kid, I rarely heard the name “Casanova.” Yes, you’ve read correctly. Casanova is both a noun (last name), and sometimes used as an adjective. In essence, it means a “lover/player.” It also meant “sweet talker.” These kinds of words were not used in everyday street language when I was growing up. In fact, I almost never heard it unless I was watching one of those old film noir movies on TV. The only other time I heard it (maybe once) was when a straight guy is talking to a girl he likes, and then gets cock blocked by another dude. ??

These 3 Men Where Fine As Hell Back In The Day!

I don’t know about you guys, but I had a slight crush on Gerald LeVert. He was a nice looking, and always very well groomed bear. Everything from his hair down to his close was freshly cut. The man knew how to dress. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo of him looking scruffy. Actually, all three of them were very good  looking. The three man group consisted of Marc Gordon; and now both deceased Gerald and Sean LeVert ?.

LeVert SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Both Sean and Gerald LeVert were sons of Eddie LeVert, founder and lead singer of the legendary group, The O’Jays. Like their father Eddie, they were extremely talented; not just vocally, but physically as well. They were to big boys that could dance their asses off. I don’t care what anybody says! Although they sang different types of music,

Another Sad Story, Of An Outstanding Group!

We would never know what heights their careers could have reached, because after 12 years of being together, a megaton bomb hit. Gerald accidentally overdosed on prescription drugs in 2006. I am so stunned on how common drug overdose still is in this country. And a couple of years after Gerald’s death; Sean died while in jail for not paying child support. Marc Gordon, who’s now in his mid 50’s, was responsible for writing many of the groups hit songs. Shortly after the death of Gerald, he started a foundation to help bring awareness to prescription drug overdose.

Gerald LeVert, with Father Eddie LeVert
Gerald LeVert, pictured with Father Eddie LeVert

I think LeVert is probably most remembered for their massive 1987 hit “Casanova.” which reached #5 on the Top 100 Charts. Every single Black person was bobbing their head to this song. Straight women went crazy when you played this song at parties. Who knows? This could have been the start of “booty music.” ? Lastly, there is another favorite of mine, which peaked at #1 in 1989. The song featured Heavy D (I think The Boyz too), and it was called “Just Coolin’.

The legendary Paula Abdul. SpotifyThrowbacks.com

You know, despite all the controversy and rumors (and perhaps accusations of being an intellectual property thief) that surrounded her in the 80s; the one thing that cannot be taken away from Paula Abdul, is her very real talent. You can dish out your worst about Paula, but the fact is, she can dance her ass off! Whether she has a singer’s voice or not is debatable. She’s kind of like Madonna in a way. Madonna never had a “singer’s voice,” but she had music that young people of her generation connected to, which in tern sold millions. Paula is the same way I think. But even so, I think her dancing makes up for a less than dynamic vocal range.

I Always Confused Paula With Lisa Lisa!

I Always confused Paula with Lisa Lisa back in the day. The were like blood sisters. The only difference was Lisa Lisa has a darker complexion. Today, @ age 56, Paula has a long successful career as an actress, dancer, choreographer, recording artists, and producer. There is no sign of this woman ever slowing down. She definitely kept herself busy.

Paula Abdul, with Janet Jackson. SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Throughout the years, as Paula rose to the peak of her career; she’s been plagued with all sorts of rumors. Rumors ranging from Paula steeling dance moves from other choreographers (particularly after her success working with Janet Jackson), to her being accused steeling bras worth in the 5 digits. Check this article out from The Daily Mail. When someone publicly accuses a celebrity like Paula (with her status in Hollywood), that’s when you know they’ve reached a level of real fame and money. By the way, I don’t know how I manage to find this rare rehearsal video of Janet and Paula on YouTube.

Paula Abdul on SpotifyThrowbacks.com

Paula came out with a lot of music I really liked. One of my huge favorites is a ballad called “Rush Rush” from her 1991 “Spellbound” album. I was watching an old live Patti Labelle performance on VHS, and I remember her saying that this song was originally written for her, but Patti turned it down. So Paula took it instead. Patti stated she was sorry she turned it down, as it hit #1 that same year! ? “Cold Hearted” is another dance favorite. Oh, man! I can’t forget about “Straight Up.” Almost all the kids was dancing to that song. Paula hadn’t had a hit since the early nineties; but it’s wonderful to see she’s still working doing her thang @ age 56!

Paul McCartney & Michael Jackson. May The Best Man Win!

I really loved “May The Best Man Win” kind of songs! Back in the 80s, a lot of male artists collaborated, or made some what duets (particularly in hip hop); friendly and fun songs about competing for the one girl they’ve liked. However, for those type of songs, I preferred songs more like “The Girl Is Mine,” by Paul McCartney and the late Michael Jackson. And the reason is because, lyrically speaking, it was about two guys expressing why one of them is more suited to have a relationship with the girl than the other; rather than your typical “this girl is fresh meat.” ?

Friendly Girl Competition

However, the song “Say Say Say,” written by both Michael Jackson & Paul McCartney, was always an interesting song to me (lyrically), yet weird at the same time. Because, you got two expressing their honest feelings about not wanting the girl stringing them along, or keeping their relationship in limbo; however, the music video threw me off, as I see absolutely no relation between street performances and this love song! ? This had to be one of those moments they didn’t have creative ideas, so they just threw the video together to meet a deadline. ?

Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney, May The Best Man Win!

Well, I guess that really didn’t really matter in the long run; because the song hit #3 on the Adult Contemporary Charts,  #1 on the Top 100 Charts, #1 in both France  & Canada, the song did very well for itself. I think a half a century from now, you can listen to this song and still enjoy its rhythm an lyrics. That’s what makes a legendary hit! If you want to walk down memory lane, check out the video for this song on YouTube.

Stevie Nicks's Stand Back, released in 1983, was one of the few favorites I had, after she left Fleetwood Mac

Stevie Nicks’s “Stand Back (1983),” which hit number 5 on the Top 100 Charts, is one of my few huge favorite songs from her AFTER she went on her solo career. However she made a big shift between music genres, in comparison to the music she did with the band. You know, I’ve always felt, and continue to feel that  much of Stevie’s best songs were with Fleetwood Mac. That’s just my opinion. Then again, her great great success with the band could have resulted from her relationship with Lindsey Buckingham.

Relationship With Lindsey

At one point, it appeared as though the special relationship that both Stevie and Lindsey had (in addition to Nicks’s unique voice) was what made the band the legend it s today. It is a shame that it didn’t work out. I got the impression Stevie Kept procrastinating and the next thing she new, Lindsey became a father for someone else. Today, Lindsey is married to Kristen Messner, with 3 children.

Stevie Nicks's Stand Back (1983)

In a YouTube Video I saw a while back, Stevie promises to her fans that the on-stage magic between Lindsey and herself will never die. It looks like she’s one of the very few who has kept her promise. As of March 2019, they’re schedule to perform in Madison Square Garden. Not sure if I can afford those tickets, but I would love to go If I can.

Madison Square Garden!

You know, although I’m happy that Stevie Still performs with the band (she kind of have to, because the bulk of their hits have been together, and that’s what fans want); I also took note of an interview she did with Rolling Stone Magazine. In essence, she explains that she would never do another album with the band, because she feels it would not make any money. She said she’d rather tour with the band rather than spending time and more money creating an album. I’m not sure if I agree with that! The reason is, they’re not some hasbeen band trying to revitalize their career. They’re a very well known and respected band. Fans would buy their music just to have it as a collector’s item. That’s my opinion.

The group A-Ha, as far as I'm concerned was a "one hit wonder." The song Take On Me, was their only number one hit within their entire career.

Damn! I forgot about these guys!! Recently, I was watching some old music videos on cable and A-Ha popped up! Man! I remember watching them on MTV, when MTV was just starting out!! I still have the 45rpm somewhere at home. Their song “Take On Me,” was released in 1985, and became their only #1 hit in their career. It was an extremely popular & catchy pop song. I think their song was the first pop record I ever purchased (I think). According to The Billboards, there was another song they produced that reached #20, but I personally didn’t like it. I don’t know, maybe some of my readers remember it. The song is called “The Sun Always Shines On T.V.
